As you will be taking your options this year it is highly recommend that you take a look at the following to help you choose the right path for you:

Also you should now be recording any Activities and Competencies that will help towards your future and that you have achieved during your time at school.

You may have joined the Cadets, Scouts, doing your Duke of Edinburgh Bronze award, Music grades, Dance grades etc, all of these will add up by the time you get to 6th form or college and therefore you can start recording some Activities and Competencies of things you have achieved during your school years and now is a great time to start recording these to help in the future when writing a CV or Personal Statement for University. Unifrog has a locker facility aswell where you can upload items such as certificates, prize giving awards, sporting recognition and awards. All sorts of things. By now many of you will hopefully be used to Unifrog and have some data recorded already and started researching for your future.

If you are new to the school or have not yet come across or used Unifrog then please complete the below. It is also handy for those of you that completed this in early years to retake some of the profiles to see what has changed. Remember to push the original to your locker for safe keeping.

If you know the Career that you are heading for, you can look it up here to see what A levels or BTEC courses you might need to take. If you know, it is worth still taking a look in the Careers Library to make sure you are on track. You can also have a look at what qualifications they will be looking for and whether you can go straight from doing A levels or BTECs or whether you will need a University degree. You can also look up the course you may want to do at university to see what grades you will need to get on your chosen course and what A levels are required.

Searching your next steps after sixth form or college…. 

Feel free to take a look at any of the above to help you decide on the A levels you might need to get on your chosen university course…..

If you are looking at studying A levels with a view to going onto University you can go to the UK University tool to look up the types of courses available, the different universities and also what grades you need to be achieving in order to get on your selected course.  Once you have done this you can also start taking a look at your chosen universities and what they offer, and the grades they expect you to achieve.

There is also an Apprenticeship tool if you are looking to get an Apprenticeship and you can find jobs here as it is linked to the gov.uk website and regularly updated. There is also a CV writing tool on Unifrog to help you write that winning CV. Other things to be doing:

If you have not started doing this through the lower years then now would be a really good time to start putting in some activities and competencies. If you know the Career that you are heading for, it is worth still taking a look in the Careers Library to make sure you are on track. MOOCS – this stands for Massive Open Online Learning Courses, during Year 12 you will also be encouraged to complete a MOOC(s), and can take these as part of your enrichment programme, you simply select a MOOC you would like to take and work through it please follow the instructions when you sign in. 

Why do a MOOC!
    They are Interesting
    They are a good test
    They are impressive
    They can boost your skills

At the end, you will need to evidence your findings and this will need to be uploaded to your locker and sent to your form tutor. Not all MOOCs provide a certificate so this is our way of recording them.  You will need to be able to show what you have or haven’t learnt, how it made you realise what you are interested in or any new interests it helped you to develop. Doing this will also help to keep your memory fresh so that you can talk about it at an Interview or as part of your personal statement.

Searching your next steps after sixth form…. 

University - If you are studying A levels with a view to going onto University you can go to the UK University tool to look up the types of courses available, the different universities and also what grades you need to be achieving in order to get on your selected course.

There is also a CV writer of which you will be given time during your course or form time to start and complete these. There is also a ‘Locker’ option – By now you should be storing relevant documents such as your CV, MOOCS, certificates, good work, sporting achievements, prize giving etc Your teacher can also save things to your locker as well. These might be useful achievements for your future.

University - You will also start your University Application towards the end of Year 12. Firstly you will need to select all of your subject teachers so that they can write subject references to aid your Overall Reference writer (this will be your form tutor). Your Predicted grades will also be recorded here. You will then use the Personal Statement writer to help you write your personal statement. You can start this at any time but will be given full instructions when we start this process. You must remember to send your documents in the correct way which will be stated. There is an option called ‘Ask a Teacher for Feedback’ and here if you select your form tutor they can help guide you on your personal statement with recommendations of how to word things etc, this also then gets sent to the Head of Futures when it is finalised by your Form Tutor, who will then give you further guidance. Remember the Head of Futures does a hundred or more applications each year and has a good understanding of what UCAS are looking for.

We usually start the University process in June/July of Year 12 and it continues through to December. We like to have all applications sent by the time we break for Christmas, this ensure that you can then return in January just concentrating on your studies and with a good chance of getting your desired course (dependant on grades).

Should you be on a one year course, we will help you to source any work experience you require and also can help with CV writing and applying for jobs or further courses.

University - You will have started your University Application at the end of Year 12. You will have selected all of your subject teachers so that they can write subject references to aid your Overall Reference writer (this will be your form tutor). You will need to arrange a meeting with your Form Tutor to discuss your University Reference and for you to let them know anything else about you that may be useful to your application.  Your Predicted grades will also be recorded and you should discuss these with your subject teachers. Over the summer holidays between Year 12 and 13 you should start researching the Universities you are interested in, many will have virtual open events to attend. 

When you return in Year 13 we will launch UCAS fully and you will start to write your Personal Statement on Unifrog. You can start this at any time but will be given full instructions when we start this process. You must remember to send your documents in the correct way. There is an option called ‘Ask a Teacher for Feedback’ and here if you select your form tutor they can help guide you on your personal statement with recommendations of how to word things etc, this also then gets sent to the Head of Futures when it is finalised by your Form Tutor, who will then give you further guidance. Remember the Head of Futures does a hundred or more applications each year and has a good understanding of what UCAS are looking for.

This process will be completed by the time we break for the Christmas holidays. Please stick to the deadlines set and ask for help if you need it.

There are also Apprenticeships uploaded daily so about February time onwards you should register for alerts and keep checking on what becomes available. We regularly hear about job opportunities in the futures office so please keep a check on your emails or Unifrog for comments as we will forward these on.

Armed Forces – we have contacts with the Armed forces and can arrange for Interview practice if required. Please do feel free to come and chat to us about the application process at any time.
