Searching your next steps after sixth form or college….

Feel free to take a look at any of the above to help you decide on the A levels you might need to get on your chosen university course…..

If you are looking at studying A levels with a view to going onto University you can go to the UK University tool to look up the types of courses available, the different universities and also what grades you need to be achieving in order to get on your selected course.  Once you have done this you can also start taking a look at your chosen universities and what they offer, and the grades they expect you to achieve.

There is also an Apprenticeship tool if you are looking to get an Apprenticeship and you can find jobs here as it is linked to the gov.uk website and regularly updated. There is also a CV writing tool on Unifrog to help you write that winning CV. You can also email this to careersoffice@st-georges-academy.org at anytime and we will be happy to have a look over it for you and help with any queries.

You can also search for sixth form and colleges here too.

Other things to be doing:

If you have not started doing this through the lower years then now would be a really good time to start putting in some activities and competencies. These will help in the future when writing your CV, Personal Statement or attending interviews. It is a great way of keep a record of your achievements and great work you have done.

Activities – Here you can record any of your achievements, part time jobs etc that may be relevant in the future. For further information see the Activities sheet here.

Competencies – here you want to record examples of you demonstrating each competency, see this section for more details.

In Year 12 pupils start to explore:

  • Careers Fair
  • Work experience
  • University trip
  • Apprenticeships
  • Ask the Expert

By now it is hoped that you have started using Unifrog and hopefully have some data on recorded already and made a start on researching for your future.

If you are new to the school or have not yet come across Unifrog then please do the following:

Complete the following to find out about yourself and for Unifrog to understand you more.

Interests Profile – this is to gauge a bit about you and what you do and don’t like. For further details and to take you to the instructions on what to do click here.

NB: If you have already completed these in previous years you can do them again at any time, you can also push the results to your locker and see how you change over the years.

Personality Profile – this is a personality test. Answer the questions as honestly as you can from the multiple choice selection.  For further information about Personality Profiles and Instructions on what to do click here.

NB: If you have already completed this you can take it again at any time.

If you have not yet done so we strongly recommend you take a look at the Subject and Careers Library…

Subjects Library – here you can enter the subjects that you have chosen to take and it will suggest what careers these could lead to, even if you know the career path it is worth taking a look as it may suggest something you didn’t even know existed! Equally you may have a subject that you love but no idea what career could come from it, so this is a great way to find out. For further information on the subjects library and instructions on what to do click here.

If you know the Career that you are heading for, it is worth still taking a look in the Careers Library to make sure you are on track. You can also have a look at what qualifications they will be looking for to whether you can go straight from doing A levels or BTECs or whether you will need a University degree. You can also look up the course you may want to do at university to see what grades you will need to get on your chosen course. Equally it may suggest jobs that you did not know existed!

There may be specific subjects that you need for a job that you did not realise, so make sure you do your research to reach your full potential. For further information on the Careers Library and instructions on what to do click  here.

MOOCS – this stands for Massive Open Online Learning Courses, during Year 12 you will also be encouraged to complete a MOOC(s), and can take these as part of your enrichment programme, you simply select a MOOC you would like to take and work through it please follow the instructions when you sign in.

Why do a MOOC!
    They are Interesting
    They are a good test
    They are impressive
    They can boost your skills

At the end, you will need to evidence your findings and this will need to be uploaded to your locker and sent to your form tutor. Not all MOOCs provide a certificate so this is our way of recording them.  You will need to be able to show what you have or haven’t learnt, how it made you realise what you are interested in or any new interests it helped you to develop. Doing this will also help to keep your memory fresh so that you can talk about it at an Interview or as part of your personal statement.

Searching your next steps after sixth form….

University - If you are studying A levels with a view to going onto University you can go to the UK University tool to look up the types of courses available, the different universities and also what grades you need to be achieving in order to get on your selected course.

You will first be asked what is your highest level of qualification you will have so this will either be A Levels or BTEC and what you think your predicted grade will be. Next you will be asked what subject you are looking to study, and then will come up a further list, make your selections (you can choose as many as you like)

Apprenticeships - There is also an Apprenticeship tool if you are looking to get an Apprenticeship these are the same as can be found on the gov.uk site and are up to date. There is also a CV writer of which you will be given time during your course or form time to start and complete these. Should you need help with this at any time do not hesitate to send an email to careersoffice@st-georges-academy.org. Please fee free to forward your CV for checking aswell.

You can also search for sixth form and colleges here too.

What else…

Do not forget to record your activities as you go along these can be Cadets, Scouts, DofE, Music or Dance grades etc…..

Activities – Here you can record any of your achievements, part time jobs etc that may be relevant in the future. For further information see the Activities sheet here.

By now you should be recording your competencies of anything you have done that may be worth remembering when writing your CV and attending interviews or writing your 4000 character Personal Statement for University applications.

Competencies – here you want to record examples of you demonstrating each competency, see this section for more details.

There is also a ‘Locker’ option – By now you should be storing relevant documents such as your CV, MOOCS, certificates, good work, sporting achievements, prize giving etc Your teacher can also save things to your locker as well. These might be useful achievements for your future.

University - You will also start your University Application towards the end of Year 12. Firstly you will need to select all of your subject teachers so that they can write subject references to aid your Overall Reference writer (this will be your form tutor). Your Predicted grades will also be recorded here. You will then use the Personal Statement writer to help you write your personal statement. You can start this at any time but will be given full instructions when we start this process. You must remember to send your documents in the correct way which will be stated. There is an option called ‘Ask a Teacher for Feedback’ and here if you select your form tutor they can help guide you on your personal statement with recommendations of how to word things etc, this also then gets sent to the Head of Futures when it is finalised by your Form Tutor, who will then give you further guidance. Remember the Head of Futures does a hundred or more applications each year and has a good understanding of what UCAS are looking for.

We usually start the University process in June/July of Year 12 and it continues through to December. We like to have all applications sent by the time we break for Christmas, this ensure that you can then return in January just concentrating on your studies and with a good chance of getting your desired course (dependant on grades).

Should you be on a one year course, we will help you to source any work experience you require and also can help with CV writing and applying for jobs or further courses.
