A former student of St George’s Academy has proven that resilience is the ultimate key to success after overcoming a major training setback to win a prestigious award at RAF Halton. Ben, 17, graduated from his Basic Recruit Training on 8 April 2026 as part of the Thompson Intake. During the graduation ceremony, he was presented with the Mayor of Aylesbury Trophy, an honour reserved for the recruit who demonstrates the "greatest determination and perseverance" throughout the course.
Turning Setback into Strength
Ben’s journey to the graduation parade was not without its challenges. After joining the RAF in December to embark on the 10 week intensive basic training course, he faced a hurdle five weeks into the course when nerves led to him not meeting the required standard during the final weapons handling test. Due to a lack of immediate spaces on subsequent courses, Ben was "back-flighted" to Day Five of training—effectively losing 5 weeks of hard-earned progress. For a student who had never previously experienced any form of failure during all his school years, the news was a significant blow.
Leadership at 17
Rather than letting the disappointment defeat him, Ben embraced the restart as an opportunity to lead. After just one week of joining his new intake, he was appointed Senior Man, a vital leadership role within the intake. Remarkably, at just 17 years old, Ben was one of the youngest recruits in a diverse intake of over 100 people, with ages ranging from 16 to the mid-40s. His ability to find new strength and confidence under pressure was the primary reason for his trophy win on graduation day.
Future in Cyber
With his basic training now complete, Ben has moved on to RAF Cosford to begin his professional phase. He is training to become a Cyber Communications Specialist through the RAF apprenticeship scheme, a high-tech role essential to modern air force operations – a role that was inspired by his time at St George’s studying Computer Science.
His parents have told us that St George’s was the spring board for Ben becoming the person he is today – for that they are immensely grateful. His story serves as a powerful reminder to current St George’s Academy students that a single setback is not the end of the road, but often the foundation for future achievement.
