Why study Art?

In order to express, explore and communicate ideas, emotions, concepts and relationships in a visual form!

Valuable skills and knowledge are gained from learning about and making Art.

Life skills like resilience, teamwork and higher order thinking skills; clarifying, identifying, exploring, testing, discovering new possibilities and selecting and applying solutions.

Making Art can strengthen and expand communication and problem solving skills.

Art fosters creativity, discipline and focus; enriching our lives; perception and analytical skills that benefit everyday life helping students understand themselves and the world around them in new and innovative ways.

We aim to provide a stimulating and nurturing environment and deliver a wide skill set through an exciting and enjoyable curriculum that is:

  • PERSONALISED - Lessons are personalised & individual programs are set up at KS4 and KS5

  • INCLUSIVE - Art is accessible to all students, learning techniques & processes that open up opportunities to create their own ideas

  • BALANCED - Values & cultural change engage the student with 21st century life, seeing the bigger picture

  • EFFECTIVE - High expectations interesting lessons & a planned curriculum with effective instruction & assessment

  • RICH - The curriculum is experimental with trips & catch up sessions offered

  • COHERENT - Creative thinking involves exploration, trial & error, revision & collaboration alongside making, providing opportunity for extended writing, mathematics & IT

  • SEQUENTIAL - Through lessons that build on skills; sequenced content that is well taught so students acquire knowledge & move forward with their skills based learning

Our Curriculum

KS3 provides solid foundations for that required at KS4 and KS5.

GCSE Art is designed to hone core skills in drawing, proportion and mark making; as well as encouraging careful study and critical analysis of artists work. Students are encouraged to work both collaboratively and more independently and apply their understanding, skills and their ability to experiment.

Students complete an extended project and personal investigation before they embark upon the externally set assignment by the examination board. During the set preparation period, students are encouraged to work in a very personal way using ideas from personal experiences and surroundings, to shape the development of their own work through a variety of media.

Students are always encouraged to visit galleries and look at the work of contemporary artists, through creative blogs and websites, in order to inform their ideas, development and research.

Sketchbooks are used as a way to present and document the students creative processes, exhibition visits and visual research.

The Art department aims to build on students’ conceptual and visual literacy skills so students begin to think more like artists, developing transferable skills linked to further study and employment.
