Why study Science?

In order to build on existing scientific knowledge to become leading pioneers of the future for benefit of mankind!

Three vitally important questions of modern times, ‘How will we cure cancer?’ ‘How will we solve the energy crisis yet reverse global warming?’ and ‘How will we maintain the health of a growing population?’ are all questions posed by a generation who are ultimately running out of time to answer them. It will be the job of the next generation, our children, to answer these questions. Therefore a foundation in Science, underpinning all potential breakthroughs and discovery is crucial for the development and sustenance of all human life.

Our Curriculum

The Science curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all learners. A broad curriculum covering areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics is taught from year 7 to Year 11. Post 16 students can continue to study any or all of the subjects in greater depth. We also offer options of Electronics or Applied Science. Students therefore can choose a PERSONALISED curriculum which provides the best opportunities for transition into Science-related academic or vocational courses.

Science is accessible to all our learners. Our INCLUSIVE approach ensures the scientific method can be applied to any part of the curriculum whether investigating the behaviour of woodlice in Year 7 or the tensile strength of steel in Year 13. The Science department is committed to a BALANCED curriculum with a strong emphasis on key practical skills as well as an understanding of the scientific world. Practical work is used to embed knowledge, develop skills and to enthuse students and pique their curiosity.

Each of the sciences has a COHERENT approach. Key skills are developed throughout, from pipettes and measuring cylinders early in student’s school life to burettes as the need arises for more sophisticated pieces of apparatus. A spiral approach is employed which enables key themes to be revisited and consolidated. For example, simple electrical circuits in Year 8 become more advanced in Year 9 and eventually quite complex in Year 11. The connectivity between the sciences is crucial also as many of today’s most important discoveries and inventions require collaboration and understanding between many fields of Science.

A SEQUENTIAL approach helps to promote and facilitate progress across all disciplines. Progress is monitored through regular recall assessments, mid topic and end of topic assessments. Grades are tracked and used to inform planning and groups for intervention. Most able students in Year 8 are able to opt to study ‘Triple Science’ to GCSE. All remaining students study the ‘Combined Science’ course. In both cases the depth of study is the same, with Triple Science students studying a greater breadth. Both pathways prepare students for EFFECTIVE transition to post 16 courses.

The Science department is committed to ENRICH the curriculum. We run a Science Club and are looking at how we might run a Science week. We have good links with the University of Lincoln, who visit with the mobile spectrometry apparatus, and also local companies with whom we are developing the curriculum. We are currently looking into how we might meet the vocational expectations of our KS5 Applied Science course with a goal to offer work experience with a Science based company.
