Why study Creative / Digital Media?

We study Digital Media to analyse, design, create and critically evaluate how new and existing specialised media products create meaning and impact audiences!

  • Digital Media is the study of a wide variety of media types and sectors, giving students the opportunity to demonstrate a wide range of transferable skills. Audio, Audio-Visual and Print based media products are all covered to give students a broad knowledge base to continue their studies and specialise later on.
  • As in traditional ICT, Digital Media ensures that research of theory and analysis of existing products takes place to help inform and generate ideas for designing and creating an original media product, such as an animation, to meet a client’s needs. This is then evaluated and justified in relation to audience and client requirement suitability.

We aim to provide a stimulating and nurturing environment and deliver a wide skill set through an exciting and enjoyable curriculum that is:

  • PERSONALISED - Assignment briefs are written to allow students to take a personal route, with access to individual enquiries, which interest them.
  • COHERENT - Creative thinking involves exploration, trial and error, revision and collaboration alongside making, providing opportunity for extended writing, research skills, IT skills and cohesive thinking. The course has been written to allow students to use synoptic content throughout a variety of units in order to apply key core principles in a range of different media products.
  • SEQUENTIAL - Students follow the same sequence in coursework units designed to mirror working in the media industry. Students research (LO1), design (LO2), create (LO3) and evaluate and analyze (LO4). This allows students to get in to a good habit of creating a media product using the correct steps for pre-production, production and post-production.
  • BALANCED - Students have a mixture of both exam and coursework-based units. This provides students with a more academic method of study compared to previous vocational courses and a platform to move on to university seamlessly. The exam elements provide students with a large amount of theory and the opportunity to apply this theory in a pressurized condition – a good skill to begin developing early on.
  • INCLUSIVE - Digital Media is accessible to all students at KS5, equipment and studios are high quality and students have access to all hardware and software. Trips are offered to enhance student knowledge and experience.
  • EFFECTIVE - A rigorous moderation process is in effect to ensure quality teaching and learning is present throughout the course. Throughout the course, students develop independent working skills and prepare them for the next stage of their life choices.
  • RICH - Meaningful employer involvement is achieved with trips involving media-based organisations to enhance and inspire students to continue with their studies of media as well as put a more practical element to the theory of their studies.


Digital Media is also explored at KS3 in Computing lessons to build a base for KS4 studying BTEC Creative Media Production which leads directly in to KS5 CTEC Digital Media.
