Why study Psychology?

We study Psychology in order to understand and explain human behaviour

Psychology is all about people! It is the scientific study of the brain and human behaviour. We look to understand and explain human behaviour such as why people obey authority figures (and why some people may choose not to!), how our memories work (and why we forget things) and the importance of an attachment to a caregiver for a newborn baby, and how this may go on to affect relationships later in life. We also study mental health disorders such as phobias, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and schizophrenia. We look at the characteristics/symptoms of these disorders, potential causes (genes? environment? both?), as well as treatments available to help those who suffer from the disorders.

In psychology you will develop and utilise critical thinking and evaluation skills, and you will be supported on your journey towards becoming an independent learner. Psychology is a science, so you will also develop practical skills and data analysis skills through carrying out your own research projects, which will provide a good foundation for any undergraduate degree course.

Psychology fits well alongside many other subjects such as Sociology, Criminology, Biology, PE, Health & Social Care and EPR. There are lots of transferable skills and knowledge which will help you in many other subjects. A Level Psychology is ideal for careers in marketing, human resources, education, medicine, policing and many more! Psychology is all about people - any career you choose will involve other people and this subject may give you an insight into the behaviour of others.
